1st 80 Goal Match Ever
24 October 2009
Yesterday, for the first time in history two 40 goal teams lined up against each other in a competitive match. In the semi-final of the Hurlingham Open at the Hurligham Club in Buenos Aires, the sports two power houses; La Dolfina and Ellerstina, both 40 goals, faced off in what was an historic moment in the sport of polo.
A close match was anticipated; Ellerstina defeated La Dolfina in overtime in the 2008 Argentine Open Final, however La Dolfina were out played and seemingly out-horsed by their less experienced rivals who ran out the 19-13 winners.
Ellerstina now face La Aguada, who overcame Pilara in overtime in the 2nd semi, in the final on Sunday.
Teams: Ellerstina (40) - F. Pieres 10, G. Pieres 10, P Madonough 10, JM Nero 10. La Dolfina (40) - A Cambiaso 10, L Monteverde 10, M Aguerre 10, B Castagnola 10
Belmont Polo Club manager Oliver Browne was at the Hurlingham Club to see the game. He is in Argentina for ten days playing at the Pilar club of La Dolfina player Mariano Aquerre. More details will be appearing on the website soon, however please email him; ob@belmontpoloclub.com if you would like further information about playing at El Monte with Mariano.
